The magic of the books is that you can get to know the thoughts of someone who lives far from where you live and sometimes not contemporary. In this case, this book was written in 1967, the year that I was born. I read this one in spanish but I lost it. Even though it was way sold out, Amazon helped me finding a seller of used books. Now I can read it in its original language. Richard Armour is great. This book is about the story of war in a acid and ironic way. Many plays with words that reminds me the Groucho Marx kind of humor. I read only 5 Richard Armour books of the "It All Started..." series. The one that I like the most is this one. I share with my father and my brother the same kind of sense of humor and we used to bring to the after-dinner conversation some Armour's books and read some parts and laughing our heads off.

It All Started With Stones and Clubs Being a Short History of War and Weaponry From Earliest Times to the Present Richard Armour 9780070022607 Books Reviews

Armour is a wonderful author for getting down to basics, As in" Nobody had started a war yet because everybody had 3 things in common, a rough cave, a rough wife, and an empty stomach". If you have not read him yet, this would be a good book to start with, It is his signature style, witty and down to earth..
I found this book on the free pile at my school library, and liking the layout of the cover, picked it up. I started reading it at that free book table, and within 2 paragraphs I knew that this was destined to become a favorite.

While giving an acceptable gloss of the history of warfare and weaponry, Armour also writes the only book that has made me laugh out loud on nearly every page that I have read. His ability to hit you right in the funnybone rivals that, and is quite similar to, Douglas Adams, who's voice I hear this book being read in.

Unfortunately, it appears that this book is destined for perpetual obscurity, regardless of its genius.
Starting with cave men being too uncivilized to appreciate the benefits of war and ending with Hitler committing suicide in a bunker despite not being a golf player, this is a very funny history of warfare. There's quite a few nuggets in between. Did you know that in WWI Siam declared war on Germany? Also that Hannibal ran out of peanuts.
We get philosophy of war. The 100 years war ended feudalism making war good for everyone. Armour is very good at wordplay. He matches Shakespeare in use of malapropisms as with "Good knight!" Sending tennis balls to Henry V was not cricket.
For a comic book, it's a quite informative capsule history.
I read this book 40 years ago and loved it. I thought about it recently and decided to hunt it down. The first line of an Offensive Club was quickly followed by the Defensive Club. Casualties were heavy in those days, usually around 50% was hilarious.
Richard Armour is one of the great unsung heroes of humorous writing. He published nearly 60 books between 1935 and 1983, but has since fallen out of public recognition. This is a real shame. This book, which is an overview of the history of warfare, is a real gem of humorous writing. Primitive man, he begins by telling us, "was too uncivilized and unimaginative to wage war. All he did was eat and sleep and try to keep warm. He also reproduced, though he did not know this was what he was doing when he did it." He ends the book by saying, "war is no longer called war but 'police action,' 'peace-keeping,' 'rebellion,' or 'putting down rebellion,'" and this statement still rings true even though this book was published more than 40 years ago. This book is by no means comprehensive in its coverage of the subject, being only 143 pages, but one might find it difficult to fault his historical facts, and his wit is always spot-on. Not only did I enjoy reading this book, but I feel like I learned a thing or two.
One of my favorite punny writers! If you love puns and word fun, read Richard Armour!
