The Rainwater Secret is a compelling story, based on a very real individual, that captures the reader from the first page and only gets better as the story continues. The story begins in a very conventional town in England, where the heroine Anna has plans for a typical life in the small town. However, before too long she is presented with a very personal challenge and at the same time an opportunity that takes her far from her conventional beginnings into situations that she could never have foreseen. As the story unfolds one is drawn into that new world, with all the dangers, conflicts and human emotions that working in the heat and heart of Nigeria present. The story reveals Anna as a very warm, compassionate person who also has a very rebellious, independent nature which sometimes creates both danger and conflict that she has to confront and resolve. It is a story that reminds us of the sacrifices and personal discomfort (in many different ways) that people like Anna accepted in order to try and make the world a better place for people in desperate need of caring for their needs that were both physical and emotional. It is a beautifully told story.

Excellent book! Based on a true story about the author’s great aunt and her work with the Medical Missionaries of Mary in Nigeria, The Rainwater Secret is both exciting and inspirational. Leaving behind a life of comfort for the wilds of Africa, Anna sets out to help lepers who have been outcast and left to fend for themselves. In doing so, she finds purpose in her own life. It’s a well-written book full of drama, love, heartbreak, adventure and hope. Thanks to first time author, Monica Shaw for sharing her family’s unique story. I highly recommend it!
I began this book as a leisurely summer read and had to finish it in several days because I simply became so entranced by Anna's story that I couldn't put it down. The author does a great job of weaving the story of Anna, the leprosy missions work, and the culture and history into a fantastic novel.
I enjoy the book, as I had been in that Leprosy Settlement in Ogoja, so it was like reliving it. Monica wrote very clearly as to how it was in the early days. I went in 1959, so many things had changed, but others were still the same.

This was one of the best books I’ve ever read and I’m an avid reader! I was transported to another time and place living vicariously through the main character, Anna’s trials, tribulations and triumphs. Thoroughly engaging characters and story. Loved it!

The Rainwater Secret is a gripping story that had me sitting up late at night reading. It is based on the true story of the author's great aunt. The book starts in England, then the main character, Anna travels to Africa as a volunteer with the Medical Missionaries of Mary. Anna is the new teacher for leper children in Nigeria, Africa, where life is much different than what Anna has ever experienced before. This book is well written and will keep your attention focused on the outcome. It is a good read!
This moves up to one of my all time favorites. What an endearing story. It takes one through a lifetime, full of history, compassion, and dedication. I absolutely loved this book!!!!!!
