The 47th Samurai A Bob Lee Swagger Novel Bob Lee Swagger Novels Stephen Hunter Books
After reading the first three Bob Lee Swagger books, you learn to know a lot about him, and the characters around him. And Bob Lee is endowed with unbelievable stores of fearessness, humility, rage, tenderness, and unbelievable genetic physical gifts, as well. But as unbelievable it is for a man to be as Bob Lee Swagger is, as a reader, you get to believe in him. I never fear him, and I never fear for him.Bob Lee picks up seemingly irrelevant conditions and habits which Hunter carefully seduces the reader into forgetting, until Bob Lee turns a weakness or an abnormality into a decisive advantage when destruction seems inevitable.
These books are not shallow. These books leave no loose ends. These books are destined to be read over and over again. This fourth, The Forty Seventh Samurai, may be the most complex and engaging installment yet.
One caution, start with Point of Impact (AKA Shooter) and read in order so that you can stay current with Bob Lee's character development through one war (military and personal) after another, and as time takes it's inevitable toll. In spite of age, Bob Lee's experience, instincts, brain and heart keep him an indomitable force.

The 47th Samurai A Bob Lee Swagger Novel Bob Lee Swagger Novels Stephen Hunter Books Reviews
I am an unabashed fan of the series, from Point of Impact to the Earl Swagger novels (which are almost a separate series all their own). That said, I didn't like this novel very much. The setting was not bad, although Eric Van Lustbader does a better job with Japanese culture. What bothered me was the dialog attributed to Bob Lee. At times, it read as though someone else wrote it. The words simply didn't fit the previous novels and the "sound" of the taciturn, defensive Arkansas vet so carefully crafted before. Could we posit that this is due to the aging of the man? Well, perhaps so, but my dad and his brothers sounded remarkably the same in the later years as they did in my childhood memories. My feeling is that such a forceful personality would perhaps age, but not really change much.
I can't help but agree that the feeling that the level of expertise Bob Lee was supposed to have acquired begs belief. Indeed, the ability to concentrate could perhaps be related to the skills and abilities acquired as a sniper. The specific techniques though, seem way too complex to have learned in the short period of time presented.
I was disappointed. I didn't want to be. That makes it worse.
But I'm still eagerly awaiting the next book. It should be better.
I am reading the series in order all of the previous books were very good ,and so I stated. This one was special ,because of the little girl involved in the plot. Fighting scenes were unbelievable, and the research involved in the Japanese way of life and philosophical principles are remarkable ,as well of the samurai way of life with special mention to the description of the swords. One word ,remarkable.
The Bob Lee and Earl Swagger books are some of the best reading entertainment I have found in quite awhile. Real man American hero stuff but with humility, a low key country/western manliness and always full of well-researched information about an interesting topic. Each is different and weaves the currant plot history with earlier books. It is important and essential for full enjoyment to read the series in proper order. It will jump back and forth a bit, but is easy to follow and always fun. Much military referencing and full of what makes America great. Heroism, guns, fighting, principles, calm courage, NASCAR, law enforcement, real men - the list goes on and I hope it never ends and dread reading the last book. My hat is off to Mr. Stephen Hunter and beg him to keep writing.
In the humble opinion of this crusty ole Marine, the book started off extremely slow, but having stuck with it, it turned into an intense action packed novel with twists and turns that kept the reader guessing.
There were a few passages that could try the more conservative reader, however, if the reader realizes that other cultures have different values than we Americans do, it should pass muster.
Outstanding novel, on to ..........
I've read all the earlier Swagger books, very well done. This seems like the author just saw the Tom Cruise Samurai movie and felt compelled to join the trend. I could not finish the book. I read a little over 1/3 of the book and kept waiting for the swagger sniper to materialize, instead we just received a lot more information on the samurai life than you ever wanted. I couldn't take, please someone come take this 47th blunder away.
Take a moment to picture Bob Lee Swagger. He's in his 60s, with an awful lot of hard miles on the chassis, sporting a replacement hip. Though he makes it a point to stay in shape, face it, he should be moving with the fluidity, grace, and speed of a long-retired NFL lineman. Our wildly improbable story here has him going to Japan to return a samurai sword to the child of a man his father killed in WWII. Turns out, it's an incredibly rare sword, practically priceless, and the new owner is murdered for it. Bob Lee swears vengeance on the killers! So, he spends weeks eating sushi and watching samurai DVDs, goes back to Japan, spends a week learning sword fighting, and then proceeds to whack younger foes who have been killing with swords for years.
If that sounds reasonable to you, then buy this book. Otherwise, you'll be hard pressed to control your gag reflex as you wade through some of the silliest writing I'm come across in a while. Hunter stops short of having Swagger fly 50' through the air while trading sword-blows with a passing opponent at tree-top height, but he doesn't stop very far short. I can only imagine that next, Swagger will build a rocket, launch himself to the International Space Station, unlimber a Dragonuv with the world's biggest sniper scope, and take out the Ayatollah while he's sunbathing in his back yard.
RIP, Bob Lee. It was a great ride while it lasted.
