This book is like Roald Dahl for adults. A surrealist feminist novel. I enjoyed it. The author ran in the same circle as Picasso. I found it interesting as a study in surrealist thought of the time. Allusions to mythology and fairytale are interesting. All in all it is a bit of a bizarre little book. You might like it if you have a curious mind. Read the introduction. It will help.

The Hearing Trumpet Leonora Carrington Helen Byatt 8601405553119 Books Reviews

It is an odd novel about very old woman who is sent off to a retirement home. It is a whimsical romp, a work of magical realism. And no wonder. Leonora Carrington was a surrealist painter, born in England who lived in Mexico most of her life. The book is true to the legacy of Surrealism, her revolutionary world view and her interest in alchemy and art. Thoroughly enjoyable, absurd and entertaining.
This simple little novel was quite uncomplicated, endearing and magical. I would recommend for children with vivid imaginations and those looking for a little post-surrealist treat.
Funny, witty, and a great visionary story. Leonora Carrington was a wonderful writer.
I love the style of Leonora Carrington's writing - a beautiful, fantastically funny yet interesting and encouraging story.... about getting old and still maintaining dignity... Can only recommend it
i have loved leonora carrington's paintings for a long time, and only recently got a chance to read this book. i finished it quickly.
what struck me was how fast it moves, which for someone taking it at face value might ruin the whole thing - - but for one looking at the story running through it that ISN'T in the book, it becomes haunting, dark, disturbing and profoundly sorrowful even as the story itself soars to the heights of fantasy. i can't say too much more without ruining the book, but if you understand what i believe she's trying to say happened, then you will agree with me about the haunting-dark-disturbing thing.
on the surface it still has a lot to please - - witchcraft, goddesses, the kabbalah, mysteries both domestic and occult, black comedy and sweeping adventure. the main character is as loveable and charming as she is eccentric, and she's a whole lot of eccentric. i think this may be an overlooked classic.
and the line drawings by carrington's son (i think?) are killer! i'm getting a tattoo of one of the frontispiece, marian with her trumpet.
An absolutely unique tale and style of writing. I have never read anything like it. For those who begin the book, stick with it until it starts to make real sense. It pulls you in gently, and for some, might seem confusing, at first. I am planning to read it again, as I'm sure I missed some things the first time.
Astonishingly clever, funny, witty, mildly irreverant, and happily, unexpectedly NOT Dark.
Even though "Surrealists" are now somewhat out of fashion, Leonora Carrington will likely bring you joy, laughter, a few tears, and giggles. This is a gorgeous piece for grown-ups.
